OVERVIEW
What if…
Spotify for DJ’s helped performers organise unlimited records into one system, allowing the DJ to play what they want, when they want. Bringing DJ’s closer to fans with live streamed sets, videos and community’s.
Ok…let’s do this!
How do we start? with my knowledge of the music industry and especially djing, I started market and user research on current DJ software out there such as Serato, Beatport and DJAY, not just the software but the hardware and standard tools Professional and bedroom DJ’s use, as this product would need to cater for all skillsets.
DISCOVERY
Support for Spotify
Currently there is no support for djing in Spotify or using Spotify as a third party. Previously the DJAY app used Spotify as a main provider for it’s music streaming, but this was sadly shut down in July 2020. Since then the music community have been anticipating on a new DJ controller linking up with Spotify.
Competitors
There are many DJ control software applications out there, but as a previous DJ and knowledge in the industry, DJ’s need the standard tools to be able to use at events such as clubs, bars and live streaming.
From researching throughout many clubs not just in the UK but globally, to DJ streamers, the main competitors are Serato Pro and Beatport. Serato have a great partnership with Pioneer DJ who are the mainstream suppliers of DJ tools across the world, but also support other software such as DJAY App, and Traktor.
USER RESEARCH
Real DJ’s real research
Throughout my life I have been lucky enough to stay in touch with some high profile DJ’s. I spoke with a selection of professional and amateur DJ’s to find out if there was room in the market for Spotify DJ and how it could expand to be community driven, along with live streaming and social media.
“I think the artists profile is pretty decent, but if Spotify are going to create further features such as mixes, video content such as event after-movies this could be interesting to have DJ profiles.”
Research outputs
Whilst collating the research and compiling a list of key features, nice to haves and issues that the DJ’s have expressed during the interviews, the findings were weighing quite heavy on reliability of streaming. This was something I had concerns with at the start, which is were offline mode would need to be activated during a live club event.
Live video streaming and mixes were a nice to have, especially with the amount of live mix streaming on social apps such as Tik Tok and Twitch.
Project Goals
I have identified three main goals for the app:
Users should be engaged with the app despite games themselves being unavailable in the app. The engagement should happen before, during and after the games.
Both everyday football fans and people tuning in just for the event should feel that the app is valuable and enjoyable.
Thanks to the app users should have a perception of FIFA as a socially responsible and inclusive brand, highlighting organisation's social and charitable work around the world.
